Urgent Message Regarding Your
Estimated Tax Payment
If you mailed a Federal estimated tax payment to the IRS San
Francisco post office box between September 1 and September 11, your check may
have been lost. The IRS reports that about 30,000 checks, mostly Form 1040-ES
quarterly payments, fell into the San Francisco Bay when their courier vehicle
crashed on the San Mateo Bridge.
The IRS said it will to send a notice to potentially affected
taxpayers who have previously mailed estimated tax payments to San Francisco.
Since this is the first time Ohioans have been required to send estimated
payments to the San Francisco post office box, we suggest you confirm that your
third quarter payment has cleared your bank. Be sure to verify endorsement by
the Internal Revenue Service.
If your check hasn’t cleared, you should call the IRS at
1-800-829-1040. The agent will check for payments posted to your account. If
no September payment has been made, you will be asked to send a replacement
check to:
Remittance Security
Coordinator Stop 313 PO Box 8337 Fresno, CA 93747-8337
You must put your social security number and indicate in the
memo section "Form 1040ES-2005 Replacement Check." Penalties and interest
related to this incident will be waived if they receive a replacement check.
The IRS will also take information about the original check and
notify you if it is presented for payment. If you decide to stop payment, you
can apply for reimbursement of bank fees from the IRS by filing a claim on Form
8546.
Please note that Bober, Markey, Fedorovich & Company cannot make
the call to the IRS on your behalf without a Power of Attorney. If you wish us
to assist you with this matter, please contact your engagement partner at
